Unraveling the Mysterious World of Mushrooms

Mushrooms are one of natures most stunning features yet so mysterious. The way they grow, the way they look, their medicinal properties - all of it! It's fair to say that adding mushrooms to daily health routines has been on my mind lately.  Often time clients come to me with issues that can easily be solved with food - because food is medicine!  Mushrooms are a simple avenue that we can utilize every day and your body will be able to recognize them and use it as if they were found in nature. 

Here are a few commonly known mushroom varieties that you might consider adding to your daily routine.

1. Chaga 

Anti-oxidation is this mushroom's game.  It has almost 1,300 times higher antioxidant properties than blueberries! The body converts these mushrooms into usable energy and has been known to help with weight loss.  Put this baby in your coffee and you'll experience effects like cell regeneration due to the high Beta Glucans and support of your adrenal system which aids in stress reduction. 2. Reishi

Considered an adaptogen due to its natural reduction of physical and mental stress and ability to provide a feeling of balance. "Reishi can also help regulate an over-active immune system and is known for its ability to provide cardiovascular support" says Sandra Carter, Ph.D., founder of Om Mushrooms. 3. Lion's Mane

Talk about brain support! Lion's mane is often referred to as the "smart mushroom".  "Lion's mane is a type of nootropic, which is a type of substance that enhances nerve conduction and cognition for better coordination and agility" states Carter. Calling all athletes - hint, hint! Four Sigmatic, one of my favorite companies, makes a great Lion's Mane elixir. I also add this to my morning coffee or smoothies.

4.  Cordyceps

Get this - these mushrooms are a genus of parasitic fungi that grow on larvae of insects. How gross, but oh so beneficial! They have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat fatigue, sickness, kidney disease and low sex drive. With over 400 species discovered two have become very popular - Cordyceps sinensis and Coryceps militaris and health benefits can include boosting exercise performance, anti-aging properties, and benefits of heart health. If you find wild mushrooms on your own be sure they are legal to harvest in your state/country.  Mushrooms will regrow if you leave at least 25% of it behind - so avoid penetrating the bark layers of trees or whatever they are growing on.  It's also best to harvest those that are larger in size.  Happy hunting!
